Patriots News · Rockdale at Berkmar Football Preview

Rockdale Bulldogs (8-AAAAAAA)

Coach: Greg Manior

2016 Record: 2-8

Last week: Season opener

Berkmar Patriots (7-AAAAAAA)

Coach: Kenan Dever

2016 Record: 0-10

Last week: Season opener

Berkmar head coach Kenan Dever was away in Texas attending to personal business during the team’s preseason scrimmage against Discovery last week.

However, while there has been plenty of work for the Patriots to do coming out of the scrimmage, Dever is encouraged with where his team is at heading into Friday’s opener.

But execution will only be one of the keys as they open the 2017 campaign against Rockdale County, which features plenty of size and strength in the trenches, such as 6-foot, 280-pound defensive lineman C.J. Cunningham, 6-2, 250-pound center Sam Walden and 6-2, 230-pound tight end/defensive end Dexter Manior.

The Bulldogs will pose quite a challenge on both lines of scrimmage, and the Patriots will turn to veterans like Cliff Rimple, Fernando Contreras and Nasim Abdulwahid to meet it.

“They’re going to be a strong, physical team on both sides of the ball,” Dever said of Rockdale County. “Their offensive line and defensive line average about 275 to 280 pounds at a minimum. They’re big. It’s very definitely going to be a physical night for us. We have to stay within our scheme and try to take advantage of any opening we get and try to wear them down.

Last meeting: Rockdale Co. won 53-7 last year

Location: Berkmar High School
